Grammy’s

Last night, I was tired, spent, done.  So, after putting all the kids to bed at 7:30, Jennifer got on the phone to talk to her sister-in-law for a good long time, and I put on my pj’s and nestled under my favorite quilt on the downstairs couch and watched the Grammy’s.  As  a challenge to myself, I made the rule that I had to watch every performance in it’s entirety, and I only fast-forwarded through commercials and talking.  Here are a couple takes.

  • Lady Gaga.  I just don’t get it.  I don’t know who is buying her albums/going to her shows, etc.
  • Steve Colbert.  NOT FUNNY.  Mostly awkward.  Glad when he left the stage.
  • Pink was interesting.  Pretty song, amazing that she could sing while doing the whole cirque-du-soliel thing
  • Michael Jackson “tribute” was lacking…then awkward…then a little sad.
  • Lady Antebellum confirmed all my bias against country music.  The Zach Brown Band re-confirmed my existing bias, although I liked the ending.
  • I like Taylor Swift.  She seems like a nice girl.   Her lyrics are honest and a bit idealistic and naive, but it works for a 17-year old.  She doesn’t perform very well live, though, especially when she’s covering a song, singing with Stevi Nicks.
  • Beyonce.  Great voice.  Good song.  HATED the cover of Alanis Morrisette.
  • Jamie Foxx – T-Pain – Slash mashup.  November rain is a COOL guitar solo, but it was lost in a lot of voice modulating chaos.
  • DMB was okay.  Dave is a strange cat.
  • I really liked the Green Day number with the cast of “American Idiot.”  It was probably my favorite performance of the night.
  • Bon Jovi – aka, my favorite band in Jr. High, was what you’d expect of Bon Jovi.
  • I know he’s vile & vulgar, but I really like listening to Eminem rap – what little wasn’t censored.

What is your bias against country music?

the song was basically… “it’s 1am, I’m drunk, and I realize that I’m in love with you.”

    CLICHE!

(and I just don’t really like slide guitar)
(and it’s just a little too cheesy)

  3. I like a bit of country – Johnny Cash, old Willie Nelson, Hank Williams (Sr. not Jr.), Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, – guys like that.

I didn’t have the discipline to watch the whole thing. I actually went high-brow and watched Larry the Cable Guy’s new comedy special on Comedy Central while quizzing my daughter for the spelling bee.

Didn’t care for Taylor Swift, Pink freaked me out, loved Green Day and Bon Jovi with Jennifer Nettles. checked out of the rest.

The Grammys became a kind of insiders, artistically incestuous gathering for Big-corporate Music many moons ago. It’s for folks who still think the good music is on the radio or in their local Coconuts music store. (do I sound like a snob?)

Yes you do! (and I like it!)

Aw…sad…I love country! Not that particular song (it’s a little codependent-unhealthy-angsty foolishness for me), but I love everything from Randy Travis to Mary Chapin Carpenter to Dirks and Easton. My current ring tone is “A Little More Country Than That.” ;) You need to go back to your roots, city boy!

Amen! (I knew there was something I liked about this guy) Old country and Alt country is where its at. The ‘pop country’ and radio stuff just doesn’t have the depth and honesty. Check out Brandi Carlisle’s “The Story” and Ray Lamontagne’s “Jolene”. Alt Country…

LOVE that guitar solo…but not sure in the context that it was delivered. I may be a purist but I think it needs to be performed on top of a grand piano ala the 1992 music awards….now that was cool!

you know i still love Bon Jovi, so i was pleased with the preformance and was singing Livin on a Prayer along with my TV. I am also a Sugarland fan, so i enjoyed the addition of Jennifer Nettles as well.
I wish they would have talked about who all the people with DMB were…or did i miss it? He is one funky dancer though.
Taylor Swift is 20, and her naivity is what i love about her. Her music is fun, a little carefree and not all jaded and bitter, exactly how a 20 year old should be. Take for erxample her song 15, it turely takes you back to what it was like to be a teenager…we all need that reminder.
If I had to pick a rapper to listen to it would be Eminem. He is very talented, honest hard core lyrics…terrible language. I still turn the radio up if Slim Shaddy comes on though. haha!

November Rain MUST be performed on the top of piano!

Beth – I thought of you when Bon Jovi was playing, actually. I thought you’d like it. LOL!
