Although, I’m probably guilty of it, I get tired of the endless self-promotion of our culture. There’s this moment, it seems, in the life of many blogs, where the blog-writer – a “normal person” – starts to get famous, then publishes a book. It seems that at that point, the blog usually changes into a hyping tool, used to promote the book. That’s about the time that I unsubscribe from the feed.
All that to say, I’m attracted to musicians, authors, churches, etc., who refuse to self-promote.
Jennifer’s cousin is a director who lives in L.A. I was poking around his site and came across the band 30 Seconds to Mars. I’ve heard of them, but had never listened. I had some iTunes credit, so I downloaded an album and looked them up on Wikipedia and came across this quotation:
Even though Jared Leto is a Hollywood actor, he prefers not to use this information to “sell” the band; in fact, he refuses to play at venues if they have used his name to promote the band. [link to Wikipedia entry on 30 Seconds to Mars]
So now, I’m listening to the music – and I really like it, but I also like their attitude… a bonus indeed.
