After 17 Days, Goodbye to a Dear Friend

Okay, it’s over.  I shaved today, for the first time since Jan. 2.  This pic is just seconds before the razor did it’s work.  Reasons for shaving are as follows:

  1. She didn’t like it.
  2. My boys pushed me away when I’d try to kiss them.  (And I’m the kind of dad who believes your children are never “too old” to be kissed by their dad.  You can blame my 25% Italian genes.  My people believe in kissing.)
  3. It was too hot when I was doing my INSANITY workout the last two days.  I wanted to tear it off my face.  You don’t see very many serious people in the gym with beards.  I just made the connection.
  4. There was a lot of gray in that beard.  I know it’s supposed to a sign of wisdom, but it just made me feel old.
  5. Embarrassing, I know, but my beard called out to my vanity.  I found myself admiring my manliness in the mirror way too often.
  6. She really hated it.
  7. It wasn’t worth the occasional compliment.  I’d be afraid to take a poll, but I’m guessing only about 1 in 10 people thought I looked good with a beard, and most of those were dudes.  Only one woman complimented me… and it wasn’t my wife.

So, in the interest of “I’d rather she be happy, than anyone else,” it’s gone.  I had intended to go until February, but that was not to be.  Phase over.

Charlie, long time not see, but I read your blog. I am SO glad you got rid of the beard! It made you look older than me, and that’s OLD! :) Thanks for your words. I keep reading and am blessed and sometimes get a laugh at your blog!

Looks good…don’t let the white hair weird you out…I’m almost 34 and have white at the temples and in my goatee.

I tried the beard route…wife loved it, I wasn’t pleased with how well it filled in.

Love the podcasts from Imago :)

For a man, it’s comforting to know that on any given three day weekend you can grow a full-on beard. It’s truly awesome… until it itches like crazy. But still it’s awesome. Like knowing how to build a fire without matches, it’s just one of those things that all men wish they could do. It brings you back to nature and shows the modern world that you are a man to be reckoned with.

To complete the image, a best-friend bear is good too.

How does Youtube know that I was just commenting about beards??? weird. But I never knew that they had beard competitions…

The ‘freestyle’ segment of this clip is hilarious:

  6. Being a bearded one, myself… this is a sad day. It’s always difficult to hear when one of our ranks falls to the razor.

I’ve had mine long enough that when I SHAVE IT my son pushes me away because it freaks him out.

I’m lucky. Lauren likes me with beard. And I don’t work out.

But really, you look damn good with a beard.

  8. Mitchell says:

I too have admired your manliness

  9. For a second I thought your picture was a dude from the FBI’s most wanted list!
