Dear John,
I’m listening to your album Try this morning. It’s such a cool album – very bluesy, soulful, stripped-down goodness. The problem is that this album has caused me to hate your last couple of albums.
The thing is — this album — in all it’s goodness — puts all your talent on display as a spectacular, soulful guitar player, with a decent enough voice. I had hoped that later albums would be more like this one. Instead, you continue to write schmaltzy, sappy-sweet love songs that seemed to be aimed at wooing hopelessly romantic college girls. Gag me.
I’ve heard your concerts are great! I hope to see you someday live, because I’ve heard you’re actually great live — a lot like the Try album. But, sorry so say, when I hear your songs on the radio, I throw up in my mouth a little bit every time.
Man up and start playing some rock!
Sincerely,
A talentless hack of a guitar player who is more than a little envious of your talent.
(in the interest of full disclosure: of course, my wife likes your music, so it frequently plays in our house)

Have you listened or seen to “Where the Light Is”. I’ll bring you the DVD on Sunday. Its incredible. John does a 4 song acoustic set. Next the trio comes out with some soulful, powerful blues. After that, the band comes out and closes the night.
I definitely agree with your “sappy-sweet love song” comment. The new album has incredible guitar work in it, possibly some of his best, but the lyrics can wear on me. However, John did a show on Fuse last week that was phenomenal. There were some incredible jams and he continues to stretch the guitar to another dimension. When he does that, it doesn’t matter if he sings about love, gravity, or st. patricks day because the solos have me captivated.
well said Taylor!
i just can’t get past “sappy-sweet love song”
