Jennifer and I watched Away We Go the other night, which is exactly the type of movie she doesn’t like (too artsy), and I love (character-driven & quirky).  Anyway, this isn’t an exact quotation, but it’s close, and it grabbed me.  One of the characters is talking about parenting and she said something like this:

“Being a parent forces you to be a better person than you ever thought you could be.”

I’ve been thinking about this, and I think it’s true, but in a bigger way.  Every responsibility I take on – marriage, parenting, pastoring, etc. – requires me to become a better person than I could be otherwise.  The other way of saying it is that responsibility forces me grow up, be mature, and get over myself.

Not an easy task.    Not in the least bit.
